An Amazing Opportunity

My name is Indie Russell and I am a language assistant on the 新澳门六合彩资料 co-op student placement program. I鈥檓 currently attending the University of Saint Andrews, in Scotland, where I joint major in Medieval History and Spanish. I鈥檓 doing this program as part of the Spanish portion of my degree. It鈥檚 been an amazing opportunity in so many different ways. As an inspiring teacher, it鈥檚 given me firsthand classroom experience which has proven invaluable in showing me that I definitely want to pursue teaching going forward as my career. As a Spanish major, it鈥檚 been an excellent way to get firsthand insight into the culture and language I鈥檝e spent so many years studying in a classroom but now am living and breathing in my everyday life here in Spain.

My Host Family: An Incredibly Immersive Experience

As part of my placement, I live with a host family, an incredibly immersive experience, giving me insight into Spanish family life. It is a once in a lifetime experience where I was welcomed into the home and life of a family whom I knew virtually nothing about when they picked me up at the train station upon my arrival in Spain. Over the course of these past six months, they have embraced me like another daughter and sister, inviting me to every family event, including me in every family tradition, and sharing their culture and language with me and I with them. The bond I share with both my little host sisters and the parents is incredibly tight and I know this family will be a part of my life long after this year is over.

My Day to Day in Valladolid

I鈥檝e been placed in Valladolid and work as the language assistant for Infantil in the Catholic school that my little host sisters attend. I work every day of the week from Monday through Friday, but have plenty of breaks dispersed throughout the day, including multiple coffee breaks and the traditional two-hour lunch and siesta breaks. I have eleven classes that I see twice a week. The kids are between two and six, and so my days are spent reading, telling stories, singing songs, and playing countless games of bingo, memory, and charades, as I try to use English to communicate with children who are still learning to grasp their own native tongue.

Co-op: A Taste of Teaching, Spanish Life, and Culture

Every day is an adventure in the classroom. The kids keep me on my toes with their endless stream of questions. I am inspired every time I walk into the classroom by the children鈥檚 curiosity about the world and their enthusiasm for everything around them. This year has been the opportunity of a lifetime and I would recommend it to anyone interested in getting a taste of teaching, a taste of Spanish life, and a taste of a different culture and language than the one they grew up with.

Getting to know Yennifer

Meet Yennifer, a 24-year-old from the Florida Keys. Born and raised there, she began her journey in education by attending Florida State University, where she successfully earned both her Bachelor鈥檚 and Master’s degrees in elementary education.

Yennifer’s story is fueled by two passions: teaching and exploring. She has always found joy in sharing knowledge and embracing new experiences. And 新澳门六合彩资料 came into play between these two passions.

An experience of a lifetime

鈥淲hile completing my last semester of student teaching, I decided to research teach-abroad programs. This is when I found out about 新澳门六合彩资料. I instantly applied to the program and the rest is history.鈥

Yennifer’s choice to teach abroad has completely changed how she sees things and has set her on a clear path for the future. Through her time teaching internationally, she’s not only gained a better understanding of her goals but also collected memories and lessons that she’ll always treasure. Thankful for those experiences, she’s eager to share her teaching journey with us.

Her teaching stay in Spain

Yennifer currently teaches children ages 3-10 at a Catholic school in the Basque Country. With her 5-year-olds, she engages them in learning about space and planets through hands-on activities like crafting solar systems. “Students were tasked to color the planets, place them in order, and then glue it all together,” she explains, emphasizing the interactive nature of her teaching approach.

In her 2nd grade grammar lessons, Yennifer employs creative methods to reinforce language skills, such as having students create aliens to practice the present simple 鈥渉ave got鈥. She encourages her students to unleash their creativity while mastering grammar concepts. “To prepare for the lesson, I went over the grammar and gave them example sentences to better understand,” she narrates. The students thoroughly enjoy the activity, presenting their creations to their peers at the end of the lesson. “Overall, the students had a blast creating their aliens and presenting them to their peers,” she concludes, her satisfaction evident in the joy of her students’ learning journey.

Early childhood education is pivotal for shaping a child’s future, and individuals like Yennifer exemplify its impact.

In September, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime to go to Barcelona, Spain, to become a conversation assistant through the 新澳门六合彩资料 program. Going into the program, I knew I was going to have many moments to look forward to such as traveling around Europe, trying new cuisines, and meeting new people. Although I had certain expectations, there was one thing I was uncertain about, which was the school. I did not know what to expect going into a school as an English language assistant. Would the students and staff like me? How would I manage all of the age ranges from three-year-old preschoolers to thirteen-year-olds in high school? Would I be on my own?

Leaving My Comfort Zone

After spending time here, I have learned so much about Spanish schools and what it means to be a language assistant that I would like to share.

Upon arriving in Spain, the first lesson I learned was to go outside of my comfort zone. This meant meeting everyone in the program and taking advantage of the resources that were given to me through 新澳门六合彩资料. Prior to flying halfway across the world, 新澳门六合彩资料 set up a forum on Facebook for current and future language assistants. I recommend future conversation assistants to fully take advantage of this! Through the page, I talked to many others in the program and connected with conversation assistants whose placements were close to mine. I met so many of them at the induction meeting, and not only did I find friends to have for the training session, but I also found lifelong friends that I could travel with on breaks and weekends.

Students in a classroom at work

Another benefit of making friends in the program is the ability for them to completely understand your experiences of moving to another country. Adjusting to life in Spain was difficult, and it can be easy to feel anxious and alone in a new area. However, when I would feel this way, I knew I had friends close by to talk to, who knew how I felt, and who could give me advice about the things they were doing to get through the adjustment period. This experience has been ten times more amazing because of the people I have met in the program. Put yourself out there and talk to everyone during training. You never know who you may meet!

Another resource provided by 新澳门六合彩资料 and your school is a tutor, who helps aid you through the process of anything school-related as well as any conflicts you may face outside of the school during your time in Spain. A tutor is there for you every step of your journey, and wants to help you in any way they can! As a language assistant, this is one of the most important resources/support systems to utilize! Early on, I confided in my tutor and voiced a worry of mine about not feeling like a sufficient enough language assistant. I felt a fear that I wouldn鈥檛 be a beneficial language assistant, or that the students wouldn鈥檛 like me. Even though I had detailed plans and schedules, some classes weren鈥檛 going as expected, and at times, it felt overwhelming. However, I received advice and learned something. The insight I received from my tutor, Marta, put my worries at ease. She reminded me how valuable I was at the school. She noted that I have lived in the United States my whole life up until this point, and how there is no one better who knows the culture of America.

The students and staff don鈥檛 typically meet people who are from the United States on a regular basis, so they are extremely excited to have a native English speaker at the school! I quickly stepped out of my worries and remembered how every single day, I am eagerly greeted by the older students and am run up to and hugged by the younger ones. I am asked by everyone if I will be in their class that day and see the look of excitement on their faces when I tell them they have English-speaking classes with me.

My Advice for Future or Prospective Language Assistants

Know the value that you add to your school! Going to school as a conversation assistant has very easily become something that I look forward to doing. The other tip I have for future conversation assistants is to expect the unexpected. I had an idea of how each activity would go in every class, and that the lessons would flow smoothly and perfectly. After some time executing my lesson plans with classes, I learned that not everything goes as planned, which is okay! It鈥檚 important to get to know your students on a personal level, and to evaluate how they act within the class as a whole. This gives you the opportunity to make connections with your students and makes it easier to predict what the class environment might be like.

Author standing, posing with friends, in Barcelona

Realizing that there will be no perfect activity or perfect session has helped me appreciate every class as they are, and has helped me let go of unrealistic expectations that I have placed upon others. Knowing that activities may not go as planned, I have also realized the importance of being extra prepared and creating a plan b to have more options if one plan does not work out. This makes me feel more comfortable with the unexpected in the class, as well as being a first-time language assistant. Embrace the unexpected!

So future language assistants, my best piece of advice for you is this: go into the program with an open mind. Put yourself out there, go on adventures, book that flight, go to that restaurant or cafe you鈥檝e been eyeing, and don鈥檛 take a single moment of your time in Spain for granted.

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is a significant religious celebration in many Spanish-speaking countries, marking the final week of Lent leading up to Easter Sunday. Rooted in Christian traditions, it commemorates the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

As we begin the week after Palm Sunday, various events are celebrated in anticipation of Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Later in the week, Maundy Thursday recalls the Last Supper, Judas鈥檚 betrayal, and the institution of the Eucharist. Good Friday symbolizes the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Holy Saturday becomes a day of reflection and anticipation of Christ’s resurrection, which is joyously celebrated tomorrow, on Easter Sunday.

Each day holds its own significance in the journey towards Easter, inviting us to reflect on the events leading to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Each day holds unique rituals and processions, with elaborate displays of religious art, music, and devotion, bringing communities together in solemn reflection and celebration. Semana Santa is a time of spiritual renewal, deep prayer, and cultural expression, embodying the profound significance of the Easter story.

During Semana Santa, Spain welcomes tourists, processions, drums, various depictions of saints and the Virgin Mary, and an abundance of traditional cuisine. Here, you’ll discover a variety of dishes ranging from chickpea and spinach stews, cod tortillas, torrijas, and an endless array of dishes from various regions. The culinary culture during these celebrations stems from the customs and permitted foods during this sacred period, spanning from Plam Sunday to Easter Sunday. These generally abstain from meat and oppose the abundance displayed during Carnaval. Austerity characterizes Semana Santa鈥檚 gastronomy, both in preparation and employed ingredients.

A plate of torrijas

Semana Santa is celebrated in different catholic countries all over the world, such as the Philippines, Italy, Portugal, and many if not all the countries of Latin America. Each country with its own customs, national traditions, and unique way of celebrating the passion of Jesus Christ.

Within Spain, each region has its way of celebrating Semana Santa. As early as Maundy Thursday, in Teruel, you hear the consecutive sound of drums up until midday of Holy Saturday. These are called and are one of the better-known celebrations in the country. In Verges, alongside the annual procession done on Maundy Thursday, there is the performance of (The Death Dance). This consists of 5 dancers dressed as skeletons who dance to the rhythm of a drum. In Galicia, at midday on Good Friday, locals recreate Jesus鈥 trial before Pontius Pilate and his walk with the wooden cross he was crucified on. Each Comunidad aut贸noma and smaller region has its own unique way of celebrating this religious occasion and commemorating the sacrifices that were made. Many of you will have the opportunity to live these in real time and we recommend that you do not miss them, as they are a key element in Spanish culture.

First and foremost, do it. In the least arrogant and cliche way possible, this has been the most rewarding, enjoyable, and greatest period of self-development that I have experienced. If you are on the fence about becoming a language assistant, I can say with certainty, at least for me and many others I have gotten to know, that the experience is way more than worth it. While I understand it鈥檚 not for everyone, it鈥檚 likely that if you are reading this then the journey is perfect for you.

With that being said, I have talked with some peers as well as having done some self-reflection to try to come up with the best advice for upcoming language assistants and to provide some things that I would have liked to hear prior to my journey to Spain.

Max and a view

Be Prepared to Grow

As one could imagine, moving to another country by yourself will force you out of your comfort zone and push you to grow in ways you couldn鈥檛 imagine. Be prepared to embrace the uncomfortability of speaking a new language every day, meeting new people, trying new foods and activities, and everything in between. It may sound silly to some, but I was scared to go to the grocery store for the first time in Spain鈥 Things are different! The language is different, foods are different, and there鈥檚 lots of unknowns that can make normal activities like this out of the ordinary and a bit scary. However, it鈥檚 the little things like this that make you grow and develop in ways I never thought of. Be prepared to grow and become a stronger and more independent you.

Football stadium

Age Old Adage of Saying ‘Yes’

I am not encouraging you to say yes to everything, but you should try to say yes more often than not within reason. Similar to the point above, growth comes from being outside of your comfort zone and saying yes more often helps you to experience new things and activities as well as getting to know some great people. In one of my first weeks here, I was invited on a hike with virtually a group of strangers- something I am typically inclined to say no to. However, I went on the hike and ended up having a great time getting to know these wonderful people and enjoying the views along the way. I was given this advice prior to coming to Spain, and it has not done me wrong once. Saying yes more often will give you the opportunity to meet great people here and partake in activities that you may love.

Don鈥檛 Forget We Are Performing an Important Role, You Get Out What You Put In

It鈥檚 easy to get caught up in the infinite things to do while here in Spain. While it鈥檚 absolutely a great thing that boredom rarely exists, it鈥檚 also important to remember the real reason we are here. For many of us, the role of a language assistant is our first post-graduation work experience, and it should be treated that way. We have the opportunity to truly make a difference and teach students the amazing skill of speaking another language, whether you are teaching 7-year-olds or 17-year-olds. Work hard, and really try to help the students improve their second language. It鈥檚 an extremely gratifying role when you put in the effort. You get out what you put in.

Mountain top view after a hike.

On a More Boring Note鈥 the Legalities

It鈥檚 almost inevitable that you will face problems with the immigration side of things, whether those problems arise in Spain or in your home country prior to coming. Almost every language assistant I know, no matter where they are from, has had some problems with paperwork, delays, visas, and all the fun stuff. I had to delay my start date by a month due to problems with getting my visa. Two pieces of advice for this. First and most importantly, be proactive and do not be afraid to ask for help. It can be a very daunting and confusing process trying to get everything in order, especially when trying to do it by yourself. Ask for help and use all the resources you can to make sure you have everything you need. If something needs to be done, such as getting an appointment, an apostille, a background check, or whatever it may be, do it as soon as possible. It will take longer than you think. Secondly, a delay or problem with a start date or paperwork is not the end of the world- it will get figured out. Do not give up this opportunity because you can鈥檛 get a TIE or VISA appointment yet.

While this isn鈥檛 the most extensive list, I hope it helps and gives you some confidence for this amazing journey ahead. As you go through the challenges and joys of being a language assistant and living in a foreign country, cherish the growth, embrace the opportunities, and make a lasting impact.

In Spain, when we want to say 鈥淗appy Valentine鈥檚 Day!鈥, we say 鈥溌el铆z d铆a de San Valentin!鈥. Our more seasoned Language Assistants might be able to point out that the word 鈥淪an鈥 means 鈥淪aint鈥. In Spain, although celebrated in similar ways, we recognize the 14th of February as Saint Valentine鈥檚 Day.

Who is Saint Valentine?

Saint Valentine was an Italian clergyman who lived during the 3rd century Roman Empire. The details of his life aren鈥檛 entirely clear, but he was believed to have been ministered to persecute Christians under the Roman Emperor Claudius II. Valentine defied Claudius鈥檚 decree prohibiting marriage for young men. At the time, young and single men were believed to make better soldiers, hence the prohibition of their marriage. Valentine performed marriages in secret, thus earning the reputation of the patron saint of love and marriage. He was eventually discovered, imprisoned, and executed on February 14, 269 AD.

Just like many countries, in Spain, Valentine鈥檚 Day is known as the day of love and romance, celebrated with roses, heart-shaped gifts, and romantic dinners. Beyond this, in Spain, the holiday also honors friendship. Friends often exchange cards, gifts, and tokens of appreciation, making it a day to celebrate the ties of friendship as well.

Valentine’s Day Arts & Crafts

Bring Festivities into the Classroom

At the end of the day, Valentine鈥檚 Day is not exclusive to lovers. It鈥檚 a day when we show our appreciation to those who surround us. Find a way to show your students how much they mean to you! They will appreciate it. If you want to implement the holiday during one of your classes, but don鈥檛 know how, here are some ideas:

  1. Card Making: Encourage your students to write a couple of cards for their loved ones in the language you are teaching them.
  2. Class discussion: Lead a class discussion about the history of Valentine鈥檚 Day and compare the customs with those of your home country.
  3. Vocabulary Bingo: Create bingo cards using love and friendship-related words and have your students match the English words to their Spanish translation as you call them out.

English has become a global language, and as a result, teaching English as a second language (ESL) has become both, a popular career choice for many and a great international experience to add to their resume for others. Teaching English abroad is one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences that you can have while also making a difference in the world. In this blog, we will explore the advantages and disadvantages of teaching English abroad, the requirements needed to start your teaching career, your options for teaching abroad, and ultimately whether it is worth it or not.

Advantages of teaching English abroad

Teaching English abroad has many advantages. First, it provides an opportunity to experience a new culture. You will have a chance to immerse yourself in a foreign community, learn its customs, and gain a new perspective on life. You will also get to travel to nearby countries that otherwise would be time-consuming (and costly) to reach. Second, it allows you to . Teaching English can improve your communication abilities, including your skills in conflict resolution, public speaking, and problem-solving. Third, it presents opportunities to learn a new language. It is easier to pick up a new language when you are immersed in it daily. Finally, teaching English abroad can be a financially rewarding experience, with many programs offering competitive compensations and other incentives such as free training or accommodation.

language assistant teaching english abroad

Disadvantages of teaching abroad

There are also some disadvantages to teaching English abroad that are worth considering. To start with, adapting to a new culture can be difficult, and homesickness can be a real challenge. Additionally, it can be hard to navigate the logistics of setting up your life in a foreign country. Simple tasks, such as opening a bank account or getting a cellphone, can be difficult without a good understanding of the local language or customs. Also, cultural differences can present challenges in your work. Teaching methods that work in one culture might not be effective in another. What children and teenagers are interested in back in your home country might be different from what kids in your destination are fond of. Lastly, teaching English abroad can be a lonely experience for many if they do not manage to create connections in their new home.

Requirements to TEFL abroad

To teach English abroad, you will typically need a college degree and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) or TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certification. Some countries may require additional certifications or teaching experience, but TEFL/TESOL certification is generally the starting point. If you are not a university graduate or you do not have a certificate in teaching English, do not be discouraged! There are also programs in several countries that accept undergraduates or do not require a TEFL/TESOL. You will also need to have a good grasp of the English language, as well as a passion for helping others to learn. Additionally, you will need to have the ability to adapt to new situations and be prepared for the challenges that come with living and working abroad.

English language assistant teaching abroad

Options

There is a wide variety of options for teaching English abroad. Some people teach in schools, colleges, or universities, while others teach in language schools or tutor students privately. The type of opportunity you end up with will depend on your qualifications, experience, and interests. One of the easiest ways to start your teaching English abroad adventure is through a Language Assistant program. These programs are offered in many countries and they usually provide support with all the documentation required to move to the new country. Besides, there is a whole community around these programs to welcome you, which makes the transition to your new life smoother. Who does not want to count on a support network who is going through the same experience?

Is teaching English abroad worth it?

Teaching English abroad can be a life-changing experience that opens you up to new cultures and ways of living. While there are challenges in this path, the rewards can be truly remarkable. It is an excellent way to travel the world, improve your soft skills, and make a difference in people’s lives. If you are interested in teaching English abroad, consider the requirements and options available to you. Are you an undergraduate student or a recent graduate? Our Language Assistant programs do not require a TEFL/TESOL certificate or previous experience to participate. Check them out, this may be your shot!

Hallo allerseits!

Leben in Madrid

Sprachassistent in Madrid

Walking into the 2nd ESO classroom (2nd level of the 鈥渆ducaci贸n secundaria obligatoria,鈥 or obligatory secondary education, for the uninitiated) on my first day of school, my initial reaction was surprise. All of the kids seemed so much younger (and tinier) than I thought they were going to be! Years of watching American TV shows with high schoolers played by 20-year-olds had completely skewed my expectations of what 13-year-olds would be like. I thought I would rapidly need to reassess the ESL activities for students I had planned.

Despite my initial reaction, however, many of the students quickly proved that their English was more than good enough to hold a conversation. They had curiosity (and a desire to skip class to work with me) in spades. Now I was faced with the question: How would I hold their attention and teach them all the wacky and fun pieces of American culture they wouldn鈥檛 find on a Netflix show? My answer was actually inspired by another 新澳门六合彩资料 assistant.

A popular meme in the United States is the concept of 鈥淔lorida Man鈥. These are men from Florida who are constantly getting into mishaps that make newspaper stories so much more entertaining. For a speaking exercise, I had students look through several headlines that feature 鈥淔lorida Man鈥 and then come up with stories based on those headlines. Most students had a blast 鈥攁nd questions about what exactly is going on in Florida鈥 trying to be creative with it. They laughed at the headlines, but they definitely learned something uniquely American and practiced their English. It was also fun for me to listen to their tales and ask questions about them.

Enhancing Language Conversation: Implementing Engaging ESL Activities for Students

There鈥檚 been a bit of a learning curve since I started teaching in Madrid. Before joining 新澳门六合彩资料, I had only ever worked with adult learners 鈥攑eople who had actively chosen to continue their education and were committed to learning. Working with 12-16-year-olds is an entirely different experience, as anyone might guess. While their energy can be boundless, their attention spans are shorter, and the things they like most about school are gym class and seeing their friends. But in some way secondary students are like adult learners: as long as you can find a subject they鈥檙e interested in, they鈥檒l put in more effort. And enough of the students I鈥檓 working with want to learn more about the weird parts of the United States to make activities like 鈥淔lorida Man鈥 an entertaining exercise.

Engaging in ESL activities for students like these is key to fostering a dynamic learning environment. It鈥檚 only been a little over a month since I got started, so I鈥檓 not sure yet what else I鈥檒l learn about my students (aside from how much they love 蹿煤迟产辞濒) 鈥攏or what I鈥檒l be teaching them next about the US! Cryptids from Appalachia? What are the best ways to navigate New York City? Regional accents, attitudes, and dialects? There鈥檚 a lot we can cover. But I do know that whatever I choose to do, I shouldn鈥檛 underestimate the kids鈥 creativity nor be surprised by what they find most interesting.
